The winners have emerged…
Yes, the winners have emerged, and I am grateful to be named among them. I am grateful to God for the gift of writing; grateful to my friend, Cynthia Peter who let me in on the opportunity by tagging me in a tweet; and I am also grateful to the organizers and all who made this possible.
I knew I could write and tell stories, but I never actually thought of myself as a writer. Maybe it is because I didn’t believe in my writing skills enough to call myself a writer. But I am grateful that I have people who thought of me as a great writer, people like Cynthia Peter.
When I got tagged in the tweet advertising the contest, my first thought was: do I really want to do this? But a second, and a stronger thought came, and that thought was: what do I stand to lose? And the sincere answer was “nothing”. So I jumped on the contest.
It was my first ever writing contest, and I came up second runner up. That position got me 3 trays of “33” Export Lager Beer, a brand new laptop, and a cash prize of N200,000. The first runner up, Adeoye Emmanuel Aanu, went home with N300,000, and the grand winner, Ikeogu Chinemerem Chibuikem, went home with N500,000.
Winners are 10 in total, but only the top 3 walked away with cash prizes. The 7 other contenders walked away with brand new laptops and other items. When I got to know some of them, and what they have been able to achieve as writers, I felt truly humbled and blessed (not lucky) to be counted among the top 3 winners.
It was a grand event, and a great experience. I made new friends; the grand winner himself, Ikeogu Chinemerem Chibuikem, or should I say Henry Ikeogu. 🙂 Another one is Gift Wogu, who I felt at that evening was the most experienced writer, with a lot of work in her portfolio. I still wonder why she didn’t make the top 3, because she is very good. Anyways, she’s now a friend.
There were over 160 entries from all around the country. But for some reason I’d call grace, mine was among the top 10, and then top 3.
I am thrilled. I am grateful. I am blessed.
