TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

If no one has ever told you, then I’m telling it to you right now: take charge of your personal brand. If you do this now, you’ll thank me later.

Here are a few quotes I pulled up for you so you can better understand me:

“Branding is what people say about you when you’re not in the room”

– Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.

“Personal branding is about managing your name – even if you don’t own a business – in a world of misinformation, disinformation, and semi-permanent Google records. Going for a date? Chances are that you ‘blind’ date has Googled your name. going for a job interview? Ditto.”

– Tim Ferris, American author best known for “The 4-Hour Workweek”.

“It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have. Your reputation online, and in the new business world is pretty much the game, so you’ve got to be a good person. You can’t hide anything, and more importantly, you’ve got to be out there at some level.”

– Gary Vaynerchuk

“We are the CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You”

– Tom Peters, Writer

There is no question about whether or not you have a personal brand because you do. The question is whether or not you’ve taken control of your personal brand.

You already have a personal brand. Everyone does. But not everyone takes control of their personal brand. You need to take control of your personal brand, you need to OWN IT.

Personal branding is the process of managing your name and image, and what you’d like people to associate you with, know you for, and see you as.

Already, people are associating you with things in their minds that you are not aware of. But are those things what you’d like people to associate you with? Ask 5 different persons to tell you 2 to 5 different things they can associate with you, ask them what comes to their mind when your name is mentioned.

When you hear Bill Gates you think of Microsoft, and when you hear Steve Jobs you think of Apple. If I mention Steve Harris, business development comes to mind. When I mention John Obidi, Social Media Strategy comes to mind. I can go on and on. When your name is mentioned, what comes to the mind of people, or what would you like to associate yourself with?

Again, what are people currently associating you with? Find out, and ask yourself if that’s what you want people to associate you with or know you for.

It mustn’t be a company. It could be anything. It could be a profession, a skill, a topic, an opinion, a passion or hobby, a software or tool you’re good at, anything. Think of demonstrating thought leadership in the area of your expertise, industry, passion or opinion.

Looking back at the quotes, you’d see that taking charge of your personal brand is important whether or not you own a business. It’s important whether or not you’re employed.

Being intentional about how you want to be presented to the world is what I’m talking about. It’s about giving yourself the edge, standing out of the crowd, positioning yourself for the things you desire.

The importance of personal branding is huge. And like I said earlier you already have a brand, you just have to be intentional about it now. Do you want to have your personal brand be by default or by design? Take charge!

I’m glad you read through!
